ABOUT US

Fitness Matters is a personal training and spin studio. We aim to fulfil the demand of people who dislike large and impersonal health clubs, preferring a less imposing and friendlier environment for exercise thus making it easier for clients to achieve their health/fitness goals.

There are no membership fees, no peak periods, no waiting for machines and no need to feel intimidated by other gym users, meaning you can concentrate solely on getting 100% out of each and every session you do

SERVICES

There are 2 ways personal training works at fitness matters, 1:1 personal training or small group personal training.

1:1 personal training

Working 1:1 with me and train at your own pace and ability.  Sessions last between 45 to 60 mins, depending on your fitness capabilities, and they cost £30 per session.  This session can either be in the studio, outside or a combination of both.

Small group personal training

This is a great way to enjoy the benefits of traditional 1:1 personal training with a small group that you put together. It provides the attention of a personal training session, while also appealing to your need to be budget-conscious. It allows you to share the cost with a small group.  Sessions last between 45 to 60 mins depending on the groups’ fitness capabilities. Prices vary depending how many are in the group:

  • 2:1 cost £40 per session
  • 3:1 cost £50 per session
  • 4:1 cost £60 per session

(this session can either be in the studio, outside, or a combination of both).

If you buy 10 sessions up-front you will recieve a discount of 10 %.

Strength and Conditioning Classes

  • These take place on a Monday and Wednesday evening at 6 , cost £15 per class
  • Numbers limited to between 6-8 people per class
  • Combines strength and muscle building exercises using free weights with conditioning work – ski erg , assault bike , wall balls , prowler , rowing machine etc
  • You must have a reasonable fitness level and some weight lifting experience to be able to take this class

PERSONAL TRAINING

It’s a fact that 80% of gym members leave because they don’t achieve their fitness goals.

Here at Fitness Matters, we help people reach their health and fitness goals through a blend of cardio and functional exercises and we are here to guide and motivate all the time in helping to create a better and healthier you.

We can help you to:

  • lose weight.
  • tone up
  • improve body shape
  • increase fitness levels
  • increase strength
  • alleviate stress
  • improve sports specific performance
  • get into shape for that special event

All our clients at Fitness Matters wear a polar heart rate monitor which is linked to an iPad, this way we can safely monitor the client’s heart rate, and at the end of each session we can see how hard the client has worked and how many calories have been burned per session.  These in turn can then be e-mailed to the client to help track progression.  As a new client at fitness matters we start with an initial health consultation, goal setting and discussion about your diet and nutrition.

This will include assessing your weight, body fat %, blood pressure, lung capacity and resting heart rate.

You will then be put through a very simple fitness test which lasts no longer than 2 mins, which will help us assertain your general fitness levels.  From these results we will then put together your own individual tailor-made program which will help you reach your goals and targets. Nutritional advice will also be given after you fill in a weekly food diary.

NUTRITION

Whatever your fitness goals are, nutrition and what you put in your body plays an extremely important part in achieving these goals.  If you’re looking to lose weight, tone up or add muscle mass, if you get your diet right then you are more than half way there to getting your dream body.  The eating plan below is an example of what we gave to one of our clients showing what they should be eating and at what times:

  • Make sure your drinking at least 2 l of water per day
  • Portion control : carbs should roughly be fist size & protein palm sized, no limit on veggies
  • Cut out all fruit & fizzy drinks
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Keep a food diary (you always underestimate how much you eat)
  • Aim to get at least 2-3 hrs of exercise per week
  • Be organised and prepared
  • Clear out cupboards of all ‘bad food ‘
  • Aim to get at least 8 hrs of sleep per night

And remember, achieving your goals is 80% nutrition 20% hard work

SATURDAY CIRCUITS

Why not come along to our brand new circuits class on Saturday mornings and get in shape, meet new friends and have fun!

Circuit training has been around for ages in various styles, forms and names. Basically, circuit training describes a class that has you taking part in a number of different exercises at different stations within small groups, pairs or on your own. Circuit training is a great way to get in shape and the social element of it means you’re likely to stay motivated and keep attending.

Whatever your fitness level, you can go through the circuit at your own pace, so it’s perfect for everyone, whether you’re a fitness fanatic or someone who’s just getting back into exercise.

Fitness Matters is a private gym with indoor and outdoor facilities just outside Hillsborough village.

Our classes are on Saturdays at:

☀️ 8.30am

☀️ 9.30am

STEF RODGERS

Head Personal Trainer & Owner

I have been a personal trainer for over ten years, and although I have recently opened the studio in Hillsborough, I also ran a successful mobile personal training company for the past 6 years – as well as managing a gym in a sports club in Belfast.

Over the past 10 years, I have literally helped helped dozens of people reach their fitness goals ranging from losing 8 stone to running a marathon, to getting individuals into that sports team or to fitting into their wedding dress and am a veteran of over 15,000 pt sessions.

There is nothing more satisfying that helping people reach their health and fitness goals and helping them change their life styles for the better.

I am a former professional rugby player – I have played for Richmond, England U21’s, England Students, Cambridge University (where I got my blue in 1998), The Barbarians and part of Ballymena’s AIL winning team in 2003.

I have an honours degree in Sports Science, and also studied for a PGCE at Cambridge University.  I have an Advanced Trainer Qualification, as well as being a part time HND lecturer in Sports Science and Nutrition.  I am also a Qualified Spin Instructor.

LYNN CAMPBELL

Personal Trainer

I have been a Personal Trainer for about 3 years now, with Level 2 & 3 in Personal Training as well as a Boxercise Instructor, Nutritionist, Mindfulness Practitioner & Life Coach.

I am a single mum of 2 girls and fell in love with exercise from an early age and love running, cycling, boxing, pole dancing, aerial silks and hoop. I believe nutrition and exercise especially weight training, cardio and flexibility are the key to a strong mind and body.

Exercise needs to be fun so I like to mix up my workouts using a range of different equipment and exercises.

SARAH IRWIN

Personal Trainer

Hi! My name’s Sarah and I’m delighted to be part of the coaching team at Fitness Matters.

My passion is to help others change their lives in the most realistic and valuable way possible. I believe that everyone deserves the right to be happy with themselves inside and out. If you feel good about yourself, this will have a positive effect on all areas of your life.

Getting fit and healthy doesn’t have to be difficult but very often it can be with so much conflicting and often convincing information out there on the internet and social media regarding nutrition and exercise. It can be very confusing knowing where to start. This is where I come in!

I care very deeply about my clients and there’s nothing of more value to me than helping someone go through an experience that makes them strong, confident and happy. I’m here to be YOUR personal guide on every step of the journey.

When I first began my own fitness journey I didn’t look like this picture! I was self conscious of extra bodyweight I was carrying and at an all time low, both physically and mentally. I immersed myself in a new way of life and have never regretted. It has had many ups and downs but it inspired me to study for my coaching qualifications so I can help others with my first hand knowledge of what it takes to turn it around.

If you are interested in getting started I offer one to one coaching and pairs coaching in addition to Saturday morning circuits classes.

It takes motivation, determination and consistency to succeed. It may not always be easy but you can be sure that you will eventually look at your body in a whole new light, as I did. You’ll not only look good but also feel better, happier and more confident. All you have to do is take that first step on the journey to your new life.
