Fitness Matters is a personal training and spin studio. We aim to fulfil the demand of people who dislike large and impersonal health clubs, preferring a less imposing and friendlier environment for exercise thus making it easier for clients to achieve their health/fitness goals.

There are no membership fees, no peak periods, no waiting for machines and no need to feel intimidated by other gym users, meaning you can concentrate solely on getting 100% out of each and every session you do

There are 2 ways personal training works at fitness matters, 1:1 personal training or small group personal training.

1:1 personal training

Working 1:1 with me and train at your own pace and ability.  Sessions last between 45 to 60 mins, depending on your fitness capabilities, and they cost £30 per session.  This session can either be in the studio, outside or a combination of both.

Small group personal training

This is a great way to enjoy the benefits of traditional 1:1 personal training with a small group that you put together. It provides the attention of a personal training session, while also appealing to your need to be budget-conscious. It allows you to share the cost with a small group.  Sessions last between 45 to 60 mins depending on the groups’ fitness capabilities. Prices vary depending how many are in the group:

  • 2:1 cost £40 per session
  • 3:1 cost £50 per session
  • 4:1 cost £60 per session

(this session can either be in the studio, outside, or a combination of both).

If you buy 10 sessions up-front you will recieve a discount of 10 %.

It’s a fact that 80% of gym members leave because they don’t achieve their fitness goals.

Here at Fitness Matters, we help people reach their health and fitness goals through a blend of cardio and functional exercises and we are here to guide and motivate all the time in helping to create a better and healthier you.

We can help you to:

  • lose weight.
  • tone up
  • improve body shape
  • increase fitness levels
  • increase strength
  • alleviate stress
  • improve sports specific performance
  • get into shape for that special event

All our clients at Fitness Matters wear a polar heart rate monitor which is linked to an iPad, this way we can safely monitor the client’s heart rate, and at the end of each session we can see how hard the client has worked and how many calories have been burned per session.  These in turn can then be e-mailed to the client to help track progression.  As a new client at fitness matters we start with an initial health consultation, goal setting and discussion about your diet and nutrition.

This will include assessing your weight, body fat %, blood pressure, lung capacity and resting heart rate.

You will then be put through a very simple fitness test which lasts no longer than 2 mins, which will help us assertain your general fitness levels.  From these results we will then put together your own individual tailor-made program which will help you reach your goals and targets. Nutritional advice will also be given after you fill in a weekly food diary.

Whatever your fitness goals are, nutrition and what you put in your body plays an extremely important part in achieving these goals.  If you’re looking to lose weight, tone up or add muscle mass, if you get your diet right then you are more than half way there to getting your dream body.  The eating plan below is an example of what we gave to one of our clients showing what they should be eating and at what times:

  • Make sure your drinking at least 2 l of water per day
  • Portion control : carbs should roughly be fist size & protein palm sized, no limit on veggies
  • Cut out all fruit & fizzy drinks
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Keep a food diary (you always underestimate how much you eat)
  • Aim to get at least 2-3 hrs of exercise per week
  • Be organised and prepared
  • Clear out cupboards of all ‘bad food ‘
  • Aim to get at least 8 hrs of sleep per night

And remember, achieving your goals is 80% nutrition 20% hard work

Spinning classes are now considered one of the hottest fitness trends around the world and have been the most popular exercise class  for the past 5 years.  Spin is one of the most fun, effective and safe ways you can exercise.  For the uninitiated, spinning classes are group workouts on stationary exercise bikes, in which participants go through a series of phases. Together you will travel on flat roads, climb hills, sprint and race, all set to dynamic instruction and music that will keep you energised.

Reasons why you should come to a spin class:

  • Ideal for weight loss , you can burn up to 650 calories per class
  • Relieves stress
  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Improves muscle tone
  • Great core workout
  • Low impact
  • Progress at your own pace
  • Time flies
  • Good fun
  • You can spin all year round

An introduction to Pilates:

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on using both the mind and body to achieve optimum performance.  It aims to strengthen your core or ‘centre’, lengthen the spine, build muscle tone and increase body awareness.  It’s ideal for improving posture, balance, flexibility and strength.  It also provides an increased sense of well-being and it’s suitable for almost anyone regardless of age or level of fitness.

The Pilates method is based on six key principles:  breathing, concentration, control, centring, precision & flow.  Using the six key principles will allow you to get the most from your Pilates sessions.

Sarah Jardine teaches our mat based Pilates classes here at Fitness Matters. Sarah offers BEGINNERS & MIXED ABILITY classes, usually in 6 week blocks, which cost £48.  The beginners / mixed ability 6 week classes will help you learn more about the principles of Pilates through controlled movement, stretches & exercises which over time will make you feel more flexible, toned and stronger.

Sarah also provides 1-2-1 Pilates sessions for those who prefer a more individual approach.

Our Pilates classes take place on Tuesday’s at 8pm (Beginners) & on Thursday’s at 7.30pm & 8.45pm (Mixed Ability).  If you’d like to book or require further information then please contact Sarah directly on 07971 019 131.

The benefits of Pilates:

Joseph Pilates stated that “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.  In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body.  If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old.  If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young.”

The key benefits you can expect from Pilates include:

  • Improved posture, flexibility, performance, strength & muscle tone
  • Development of your core abdominal strength
  • Increased balance, co-ordination, energy & vitality
  • An increased sense of wellbeing
  • Lengthening and stretching of your body to make it look leaner
  • Reduction in stress levels & fatigue
  • Helps to form a flatter stomach & trimmer waist
  • Tones buttocks, thighs, shoulders & arms
  • Reduces the incidence of injury & strain
  • Relieves tension, stiffness & pain
  • Less incidence of back pain
  • Increases bone density
  • Develops greater stability & joint mobility
  • Provides safe, efficient & economical movements
  • Will compliment other physical activities you participate in

Over the past 10 years, I have literally helped helped dozens of people reach their fitness goals ranging from losing 8 stone to running a marathon, to getting individuals into that sports team or to fitting into their wedding dress and am a veteran of over 15,000 pt sessions.

There is nothing more satisfying that helping people reach their health and fitness goals and helping them change their life styles for the better.

I am a former professional rugby player – I have played for Richmond, England U21’s, England Students, Cambridge University (where I got my blue in 1998), The Barbarians and part of Ballymena’s AIL winning team in 2003.

Sarah Jardine

Sarah is a REPS Level 3 Personal Trainer & is also fully qualified to work with Pre & Post Natal clients.  She is also a Circuits, Indoor Cycling & ViPR Coach.  She is also a Level 3 Pilates Teacher with an additional qualification in Pilates for Osteoporosis.

Here’s what Sarah has to say about herself:

Seeing people make a change for the better in terms of their health, fitness and lifestyle really inspires me as a personal trainer.  I get a real sense of satisfaction and pride when the people who train with me, start to see the results that they have set out to achieve.  This is why I have an absolute passion for what I do.

Some people find it a chore to exercise by themselves.  They may have a lack of enthusiasm and motivation.  They may not be sure how to exercise properly and appropriately. They may find it difficult to lose weight, train or tone up on their own, and they may find it a struggle to eat sensibly.  If any of this is familiar to you, then a bespoke personal training plan may be the kick-start you need for a healthier, fitter new you.

I offer bespoke 1-2-1, buddy and small group personal training sessions and plans are designed and tailored specifically for your requirements.  I can also help with weight management and offer non-medical nutritional advice.

I am also a Pilates Teacher and I run mat based small group classes (for up to 8 people) and 1-2-1 sessions.  For more information on this, please have a look at our Pilates section on the website.

I have worked with a range of clients both male and female with a variety of different goals e.g. from losing weight post pregnancy, to getting in shape for a holiday / other special occasion, exercising to improve flexibility / back pain, through to preparing for a specific sports event like a triathlon or a marathon.

My training sessions are fun, effective, challenging and motivating, enabling you to get the results you want.  If you’d like to make positive changes to your lifestyle so that you feel good about yourself, then please get in touch today to arrange a consultation.
